Air Filter Styles
Air Filters
We at Valley Heating are more than happy to come to your house and service your equipment. One thing we have noticed however is that a lot of the calls could be avoided by simply changing the air filter. By this simple act you not only save the cost of a service call but save the cost of expensive parts in your furnace.
You have a lot of choices when it comes to air filters, from the very cheap to the very expensive and everything in between. We will run through the list of air filter media and products. It is not wise to not have a filter in your system, not only will dirt and dust get into your ductwork, but it will travel throughout your home and deliver allergens and other nasty items into every room.
Poly Filters:
Are the cheapest filters you can buy, and for good reason. The standard
Poly Filter will catch up to 7% of particulate matter of 10 microns or
more. The fact is most particulate matter is much less than 10 microns.
We do not recommend the use of Poly Filters in your heating or cooling
system.
Pleated Filters:
These filters are our recommendation as the minimum filter to put in
your furnace. The pleated filter will pull much of the particulate
matter from your air, depending on the MERV (Minimum Efficiency
Reporting Value) Number, you can pull more or less partials from the
air. Valley Heating carries standard capacity pleated filters in many
sizes. (Typically from 12x20x1 to 20x25x2 in addition to the 20x25x5
size Air Bear style filter)
Electrostatic Filters:
The Electrostatic Filter is a popular choice for a lot of our customers
for the simple fact you do not need to buy the filter as often. This
filter can be washed out and replaced in a matter of hours. However
this can be a drawback for those who do not want to be bothered with
getting dirty or taking the time to clean the filter correctly. This
filter needs to be cleaned at least once a month and our recommendation
is every three weeks.
Electronic Air Cleaner:
These filters will remove a lot of dirt and particulate matter from
your home; they are efficient and can eliminate 98% of all
allergy-causing air pollutants. The unit consists of a pre-filter
screen, a positive electrical charge, a series of negatively charged
plates attract and hold the particles like a magnet. The drawback to
these units are they are somewhat expensive, require power to them 24/7
and can make a 'zapping' sound when the particles hit the electrical
charge. But if you suffer from allergies in your home this is the unit
for you.
Ultra-Violet Air Purifier:
The UV Air Purifier normally is installed in conjunction with an
Electronic Air Cleaner for maximum effect. The UV lights will remove
musty odors, pet dander, viruses, mold, bacteria, and other airborne
pathogens. In addition it irradiates the furnace / air conditioning
coils making them perform as if they were newly installed.
As you can see there are many choices for you to choose from. Be sure to ask your Valley Heating salesman for details on any or all of our air purification products.
